Great Things to Make with Greenhouse-Grown Items

The greenhouse is not only a source for some delicious edibles, but also a potential source for many household items. Try one of these recipes from The Herb Companion Magazine. as something to try around your own house or to give as a unique gift.  The italicized items are readily available and can easily be grown in any greenhouse.

Herbal Rug Fragrance

If you find your rugs smelling musty, this is the perfect solution. Simply sprinkle the mix over a freshly vacuumed rug and leave it overnight before vacuuming once again. Mix the following ingredients in a large bowl and you’re ready to go.

3 cups dried lavender flowers or leaves
2 cups dried rosemary leaves
3 pounds of baking soda

Bath Salts

These bath salts make a great, relaxing gift. Although lavender is recommended, you could use any mix of your favorite herbs. Simply mix the ingredients in a small container and you’re ready to enjoy!

¼ cup Epsom salts
¼ cup sea salt
¼ cup dried lavender blossoms
2 to 3 drops lavender essential oil

Skin-Soothing Bath Scrub

This is perfect for the gardener that has spent the day in their garden and needs to get rid of the grime. Mix all the ingredients in a jar or layer them for an added artistic touch. For each bath, put a small handful of bath blend into the center of a dry washcloth and bring the corners together. Secure the cloth and toss it into the tub while it’s filling. Scrub your skin with the ball or just soak in the infusion.

¾ cup oatmeal (not instant)
3 tablespoons dried lavender flowers
¼ cup dried rosebuds
½ cup dried calendula petals

Minty Fresh Sachet Blend

After allowing the herbs to fully dry, mix all ingredients in a bowl and allow the scents to meld for several weeks. Then put the herb mixture into sachets and place them in drawers and closets that could use some freshening.

4 cups lavender flowers
2 cups peppermint leaves
2 cups rosemary leaves
1 cup patchouli leaves
½ cup whole cloves
¼ cup thyme leaves
5 drops essential oil of clove
10 drops essential oil of white camphor
20 drops essential oil of peppermint
