1. Why are Plant Pro-Tec UNITS effective? The repelling formulation in Plant Pro-Tec UNITS is based on long known data that the garlic odor repels browsing animals. The product contains a strong, long lasting garlic odor that discourages browsing animals from feeding on or around treated plants.
2. Why are Plant Pro-Tec UNITS long lasting? The garlic odor from an activated Plant Pro-Tec UNIT is evident for 6 to 8 months, a whole growing season! The garlic odor lasts a long time for two reasons: The garlic odor is from concentrated garlic oil- one ounce of the garlic oil is equivalent to 200 pounds of fresh garlic! We have created a slow release system. Sulfur compounds give the garlic its repelling odor, and if exposed to air, sulfur compounds oxidize. As oxidation occurs, the garlic odor dissipates. It is the same as watching an exposed apple core turn red with rust as it oxidizes. We prevent oxidation of the sulfur compounds by sealing out air with a plastic cone. The cone, however, allows the garlic odor to slowly permeate through. Without the cone the garlic odor would be evident for 1 to 2 months. With the cone the garlic odor is evident for 6 to 8 months, a whole season! Another reason the repelling garlic odor is long lasting is that the garlic formulation is not affected by rain or irrigation water. Although a Plant Pro-Tec Unit has a rain-shield, we still recommend that UNITS be clipped on sideways to prevent water from getting in. Water cannot dilute the formulation, but it can create a barrier which prevents the garlic odor from escaping. No repelling odor, no repellency!
3.Why can't I spray garlic juice or hang garlic cloves on my plants? The answer is that you can, but the garlic odor will be gone in several days because of the oxidation of the sulfur compounds that give the garlic its repelling odor.
4. How are Plant Pro-Tec UNITS used?
Plant Pro-Tec UNITS must be activated before they are clipped to your plants or fences. The barrier that contains the garlic odor during storage and transport must be broken to release the repelling odor. This barrier is broken with an Odor Release Probe which is included in every bag of Plant Pro-Tec UNITS. This product must be used according to the situation. Plant Pro-Tec UNITS can be used to protect individual plants and/or to create a perimeter around a flower bed or yard. UNITS should be clipped 2 to 3 feet above the ground for deer and 6 to 8 inches above the ground for rabbits. The number of UNITS needed to protect a plant or area depends on how severe the deer or rabbit problem is! Generally, if there are a lot of animals, if the animals have a habit of damaging your plants, and if they really like what you are trying to protect, more Plant Pro-Tec UNITS or whatever repellent will be needed to protect the plant or area. To protect a plant like a rose bush that deer really love, it may be necessary to put 3 or 4 UNITS on that one bush. Don't let this scare you! Remember, we are talking about a whole season of protection with only one application. On the most vulnerable side of a perimeter, UNITS may be required every 3 to 4 feet.
5. Why are Plant Pro-Tec UNITS economical? Plant Pro-Tec UNITS are economical because only one application is necessary to last a whole growing season. Also, with a shelf life of one of more years, any UNITS not used this year will still be effective next year.
6. Will my yard smell of garlic? The honest answer is that if you smell garlic at all, you will probably get hungry for Italian food. We have never received any complaints about the garlic odor. Although the garlic odor from a Plant Pro-Tec UNIT is not strong to most people, deer and rabbits are generally very sensitive to it.
