November 28th, 2006 by Greenthumb

There are many people that love plants and what better way to grow the things you love in your very own greenhouse. But where can you get one? How would you know what to get? Well that is where an expert would be best able to help you. You can talk to a local nursery and get information about growing in a greenhouse online. Look for a greenhouse company that has been in business for several years. If they started business in the mid-90’s then chances are they are an online reseller and do not have much experience actually using greenhouses. Look for a greenhouse company that has been in business for 15 years or more.

There are many different kinds of greenhouses. You have to know what your options are and what will best work in your area, for climates are different all around. What will work in the cold north may not be good for the hot south; therefore, it is best to work out all these details including how big you want your greenhouse before getting started. Getting online and looking up this information can help you to make sure you are asking the right questions when the time comes to build or buy a greenhouse.

You will also need to know what type of plants you want to grow in your greenhouse. Some plants may not do will under certain conditions, that is why it is a great idea to chat with people running your local nurseries to find out what they are growing and what equipment they are using. There is a lot that need to be thought out in detail before getting started on your greenhouse or greenhouses. Then all you have to do is enjoy doing what you love.

Greenhouse Accessories You Should Consider Getting

November 24th, 2006 by Greenthumb

Greenhouse accessories are an important part of any greenhouse operation. From heaters to grow lights, there are an abundance of things you can add to your greenhouse to make your greenhouse hobby even more rewarding. One greenhouse accessory that is useful to have is a seedling heat mat.

A seedling heat mat allows you to add bottom heat under your greenhouse plants. It is especially useful for seedlings, many of which require gentle bottom heat to start or speed up the process of germination. Many seedling heat mats warm up to about 10-15 degrees above the ambient heat. If you concerned about maintaining your plants at a specific temperature, you should consider another greenhouse accessory, a heat mat thermostat.

With a heat mat thermostat, you can keep your seedlings at a set temperature. This can help to prevent your seedlings from getting overheated and the soil from drying out too quickly. You can usually hook up several heat mats to one heat mat thermostat, so you can control the temperature of several heat mats at a time.

Heat mats are especially useful in greenhouses. For instance, your greenhouse might be kept at 55 degrees but your seedlings need a temperature of 70 degrees or more for germination. With a seedling heat mat you can add the heat just where it is needed and not waste money heating the entire greenhouse.

So when selecting greenhouse accessories, don’t overlook a seedling heat mat. It will be one of your most used and useful tools!

The Ins And Outs Of Greenhouse Heating

November 23rd, 2006 by Greenthumb

When you are thinking about getting a greenhouse or if you already own one, one of the most important things you need to learn about is greenhouse heating. How do you decide what greenhouse heating will required for your greenhouse? Here is some information that should help you get started.

A good place to start is to calculate how many BTU’s it will take to heat your greenhouse. First figure out what type of plants you want in the greenhouse and research the temperature needed for growing them. Other questions you will need to answer to calculate your greenhouse heating requirements are: What is the surface area of the greenhouse? What is the heat loss factor in your greenhouse? What about the outside temperature at night and the highest temperature inside the greenhouse? The list goes on from here. You have to answer all these things in order to be able to calculate the right greenhouse heating settings.

Once you know your BTU requirements, you can select a heater for your greenhouse. Heaters either run on electricity or gas, and each have their own benefits. Electric heaters are generally less expensive to purchase and work well if you have electricity wired to your greenhouse site. Gas heaters run with either natural or propane gas. They are usually less costly to operate and require no electricity. So gas heaters are a great choice if you have no way to get electricity to your greenhouse.

You will find that your greenhouse heating has a lot to do with what you can grow in your greenhouse. You can choose to simply keep the frost at bay for wintering over your favorite plants, or you can fully heat your greenhouse for growing tropical and exotic plants all year. The most important thing is to decide what you want to grow and purchase a heater based on that decision.

Greenhouse Kits: Where Do I Start?

November 20th, 2006 by Greenthumb

If you want to get your own greenhouse it can be easy to do. First decide how you will use it (to winter over plants, get an early start on seeds, grow cool or warm weather crops, or a combination), and find out what greenhouse will best work for your plants. There are many different greenhouse kits to choose so it’s important to read lots of information about greenhouse kits to make an informed decision and know your greenhouse is right for your area and your crop.

When looking for a greenhouse kit, you will also have to consider size. Measure how big of space you have for the greenhouse (preferably in an area of your yard that gets southern exposure). You may be fortunate to live on acreage and space is not an issue. A majority of hobby greenhouse kits start at 8′x8′ or 8′x12′. Anything less than 8′ wide does not give you much room to work comfortably in your greenhouse. If you have a smaller space, there will be less kit options to choose from. You may need to consider a custom designed unit and look for greenhouse covering options.

If you have never used a greenhouse before, you may find that a cold frame would work better for you until you know how you will use your greenhouse. It will be less expensive and you can use it during two seasons to let you grow a bit longer out of the year. This will give you the chance to see and learn how growing under cover can open up your growing possibilities. What you choose is up to you. There are many greenhouse kits and companies that are ready to help you along the way. You just have to get online and find a greenhouse that works for you and fits in your budget.

Greenhouse Accessories for Savvy Gardeners

November 16th, 2006 by Greenthumb

If you are a dedicated gardener, you know about the importance of having your own little greenhouse. Professional growers have long since learned to employ the advantages of these hothouses, and have realized profits for decades simply because they were oftentimes able to get a head start on growing seasons, or coax hard to find flowers and plants out of the protective shells of their seeds. Yet no matter whose hothouse you visit, you will find that there are several greenhouse accessories that appear to be a must for savvy gardeners.

Greenhouse accessories are almost always practical in nature, although sometimes they may be considered more ornamental and for aesthetics. While savvy gardeners do not mind having beautifully adorned greenhouses, they are more concerned with the functional aspects.

Once accessory you should always have on hand are replacement parts. Sure, your greenhouse is in good repair, and you do not foresee having to replace anything. But if it is Saturday afternoon and you suddenly notice that your greenhouse has a missing window pane, or a loose door, you do not want to drive all over creation in the hopes that somebody is stocking the very product that you need right now! For this reason it is a good idea to have spare panes, as well as nuts and bolts that repair loose or lost items.

Other greenhouse accessories include plant stands, insulation, plant hooks, watering systems, and also ventilation systems. Even if you do not foresee needing one of these things right this minute, it never hurts to be prepared for when you do need it. After all, you do not want to loose an entire crop simply because you were not able to quickly adjust the temperature in your greenhouse, do you?

Greenhouse Heating Accessories

November 14th, 2006 by Greenthumb

Greenhouse heating is usually done by the rays of the sun. While this setup will work naturally and easily, the savvy gardener will need to realize that the sun cannot always be relied on to shine on schedule, for the desired duration of time, and then turn off when the temperature gets a bit too warm for comfort inside the greenhouse. For those days that the sun persistently stays behind the clouds, you will need to come up with a workable plan that will allow your little plants to stay warm, cozy, and not fall victim to the temperature fluctuations that would kill them outside the protective barrier of the glass house.

For this reason, there are several greenhouse heating accessories that are on the market. They permit for gentle heating patterns to be established when the sun cannot be relied upon to do the job. Usually the heating up period is instant, thus you will want to keep this in mind if there is still residual heat from the rays of the sun. Similarly, you can choose to have a manual heater or an automatic one. The advantage of the automatic heater is of course the fact that it frees you up from having to take hourly temperature readings of the inside of your greenhouse.

Greenhouse heating accessories are designed to provide an even distribution of the heat to gently get the air to cycle throughout the greenhouse, and in the process heat up. With a built-in thermostat, you can assure that your heater will kick on only when needed. Do not risk your little plants but instead make sure your heating system is safely in place and ready for winter.

Greenhouses in Modern Gardening

November 7th, 2006 by Greenthumb

Have you ever gone to the grocery store in winter and marveled at the price of tomatoes? What is even more surprising is the fact that there even were tomatoes for sale at all! You might have noticed a little notation that read “hothouse tomatoes.” You might see a similar notation on the beautiful bouquets of flowers that grace the cooling shelves in grocery stores even in winter! The term hothouse is just another word for the greenhouses, and greenhouses have become essential to gardeners the world over.

Greenhouses have been in existence for a long time. In modern gardening, they are used to grow flowers, vegetables, and fruits, even in inclement weather. Other times, the greenhouses are used to get a head start on seedlings even in the midst of winter. This way you will have choice plants for the spring gardening season whereas otherwise you would need to start from scratch with seeds yourself. In addition to the foregoing, without the early seedlings, farmers would also have a hard time getting a head start on some of their crops that may be a major financial setback if not thriving properly.

Quite possibly the most important reasons that gardeners love greenhouses has to do with climate control. Since the climate of the greenhouses is completely controlled, it is easy to have dependable crops without the worry of temperature or inclement weather that can decimate a crop. As you can see, for modern gardeners these greenhouses are an indispensable invention that is here to stay.
