Greenhouse Kits Are The Best Choice

February 28th, 2007 by Greenthumb

Greenhouses can be built from plans or you can buy greenhouse kits.  For most people, greenhouse kits are going to be the best choice for several reasons.

You will get more for your money when you use greenhouse kits.  Greenhouse kits are manufactured with everything needed.  When you decide to have a greenhouse built from a set of plans you will need to buy each thing needed for the greenhouse separately.  If you will not be building the greenhouse yourself you will pay more for a contractor to build the greenhouse from plans than from a kit.

If you buy a greenhouse kit you will be more likely to be able to build it yourself.  This will certainly save you even more money.

The guesswork is taken out of the building when you use a greenhouse kit.  You will have exactly what you need and the directions to build the greenhouse.  Greenhouse kits are usually easier to put together, too.

You will probably have more choices if you buy a greenhouse kit.  There are many shapes and sizes available when you buy a greenhouse kit. You will not have nearly as many options if you decide to use plans.

Greenhouse kits are available online.  Online sites that have greenhouse kits for sale also have people who can answer your questions and assist you with purchasing a greenhouse kit.  They will have information about the greenhouses and can tell you about greenhouse supplies and accessories that you may need.

Greenhouse kits are the best choice for most greenhouse gardeners.

Getting Ready For a Greenhouse Business

February 22nd, 2007 by Greenthumb

Are you seriously thinking about getting into a greenhouse business?  If so, there are several things you should consider.

Using greenhouses for production purposes is a very intensive and highly specialized form of agriculture.  If this is something you want to get into you need to make sure you have all kinds of information.

When people farm agriculturally the production costs are based on a per acre calculation structure.  For those who are planning to use a greenhouse for production the costs will be based on a per plant basis or a per square foot of growing area basis.

Find out all you can about soil management, plant nutrition, propagation, greenhouse structures, environmental control systems, pest management, marketing and business management.  If other people will be employed you will also need to know about employee relations, payroll and other things that are related to this subject.

Many first-time greenhouse owners who are using their greenhouses for production often begin with family members running the business. This can be a really good plan and it allows family members to learn all aspects of the business and share in the decisions and the profits.

As the greenhouse business grows or you decide to expand you may want to hire others.  It may not be long before you are simply not able to handle all the day-to-day operations as well as all the other responsibilities of the business.  When this happens you can start with part-time staff and if things continue to go well you can add full-time people.

A greenhouse business can be profitable and a lot of fun. Make sure you research your target market and all the costs involved. With a well thought out business plan, you will soon be on your way to a bountiful harvest!

Greenhouse Accessories And Bulb Forcing

February 20th, 2007 by Greenthumb

Want to force a whole bunch of bulbs at the same time?  If you have a greenhouse you are in luck.  While part of this process will take place outside the greenhouse, you will be able to use the greenhouse and greenhouse accessories to make the process successful.

You will need to make room in the greenhouse to grow your flowers and gather your greenhouse accessories together such as your potting bench, pots, soil scoop, trowel and soil.

The first stage of the process is dormancy or near dormancy.  You will not need light or the greenhouse for this step but some of your greenhouse accessories will come in handy.  You will need pots and soil and a few tools.  Fill your pots 3/4 full with soil.  Set the bulbs on top of the soil and add more soil around them. The tops of the bulbs do not need to be covered. Now the bulbs must be stored in a cool place such as a cellar, old refrigerator or garage for 3-4 months.  The important thing to remember is that the temperature should be in the 38F-45F degree range.  The soil must be kept moist and you can use your greenhouse watering accessories for this.

At the next stage pull the pots out of cold storage, watering them thoroughly, and move them into a cooler area of your home or greenhouse, around 55F-65F degree range.  Keep them cool until you see active growth. Once active growth begins, you can move the pots to a warmer area that receives more light. After a short amount of time you will have flowers! Use your greenhouse accessories to trim, water and cut as needed.

Ta Dah!  Beautiful flowers!
