Crops You Can Grow Using Easy Greenhouse Kits

May 29th, 2007 by Greenthumb

Easy greenhouse kits may be just the answer for those gardeners who are looking for a way to keep on gardening when the weather turns cold. When the ice is forming and the snow is falling, easy greenhouse kits provide avid gardeners the opportunity to grow all kinds of crops.

Easy greenhouses let you get your greenhouse hobby started. You can buy a kit with everything you need to build a functional greenhouse. The is no need to hire a contractor to get the job done. Before the first snow flies you can be ready to garden in your new greenhouse.

Maybe you want a greenhouse so that you can start your spring gardening early.  A greenhouse is especially nice for those who live in climates that are not very conducive for getting things in the ground early in the season.

One of the best things about having a greenhouse is that the environment is something you can control. You don’t have to count on a certain temperature to be able to get things to grow. Since you can control the temperature in the greenhouse you will have a choice when it comes to the crops you want to grow. If you want to try your green thumb out on exotic and rare flowers you can.

Warm weather crops are popular choices for greenhouse growers. You can have many different kinds of plants that grow well in a greenhouse that is set up for warm weather crops. Tomatoes usually do quite nicely in the greenhouse and you also might want to try peppers and eggplant.

One thing to keep in mind when you are choosing seeds or plants for your greenhouse during the winter months is this; look for varieties that are have fewer days until harvest. There will be shorter days and less sunlight in the greenhouse during the winter months and a sixty day tomato will fare better than one of the ninety day varieties.

Easy greenhouse kits will allow you the chance to grow all kinds of fun crops. Imagine how tasty these additions will be during a time of year when an outside garden is not feasible.

Planning proper greenhouse ventilation

May 25th, 2007 by Greenthumb

You will have many things to think about when you buy a greenhouse.  There are a few variables and greenhouse ventilation is one of the things that can be a little tricky.  Greenhouse ventilation is, however, a very important aspect of successful greenhouse gardening.

There are very few plants, flowers, fruits, vegetables or herbs that will do well in a greenhouse that does not have a working greenhouse ventilation system.  The best thing you can do is to think about a few of the aspects that will affect greenhouse ventilation before you even buy one.

Think carefully about the greenhouse site where you plan to erect the greenhouse.  Will there be any shade or will the greenhouse structure sit in full sun?  Are there any trees to block the wind and give the greenhouse daily relief from the sun?  Also consider the normal daily year round temperatures.  This may effect your greenhouse ventilation issues.

If you have questions about greenhouse ventilation before or after you order the greenhouse you will find online sites that offer help.  These folks are often very good at recommending greenhouse ventilation systems.  It may be that you will need a combination of greenhouse ventilation products. Vents and fans are often used and a shade cloth can provide additional greenhouse ventilation.

Keep in mind that during the summer you may want to plan on having vents and doors that should be approximately twenty to twenty-five per cent of your floor area.  This will allow the breezes to move through the greenhouse.

During the winter your greenhouse ventilation needs will be different. Vents and fans may still be needed but their use will probably vary.

When you plan for proper greenhouse ventilation you will be growing toward successful and fulfilling greenhouse gardening.

A Successful Greenhouse Formula

May 24th, 2007 by Greenthumb

Who wouldn’t want to be successful in the greenhouse?  Why would a person go to all the time and expense and not expect success? Here are a few things that can help a greenhouse gardener enjoy those successes.

One part of the greenhouse success formula is to start with a greenhouse that will fit your needs.  A common mistake people make is purchasing a greenhouse that is too small. When deciding on a greenhouse, figure out how much room you have in your yard for a greenhouse, and then decide on a greenhouse size. Make sure to give yourself plenty of room for all the plants and equipment and also allow room to work.

A second part of the greenhouse success formula is to have a plan.  Know how you want to use the greenhouse.  Will your greenhouse be used for hobby purposes and to grow fresh fruits and vegetables more of the year?  Maybe you plan to use your greenhouse to grow produce or flowers to sell.  In either case, you will be more successful if you have a game plan.

A third part of the greenhouse success formula involves quality materials.  This is as true for the greenhouse itself as well as for the crops you will be growing and for your supplies and accessories.  When you settle for materials that are not of good quality, you may not be able to grow everything you had planned to grow and you may end up spending time repairing and maintaining your greenhouse instead of spending time in your greenhouse.

A fourth part of the greenhouse success formula involves time.  You will need to make sure you allow enough time to work in the greenhouse.  Even if your gardening is a hobby you will want to have sufficient time every week for working in the greenhouse.  Time spent in the greenhouse is time that adds up to success.

A fifth and final part of the greenhouse success formula is pure enjoyment.  Love your time in the greenhouse.  Enjoy the hours you put in and take a few moments every time you are in the greenhouse to appreciate the beauty.

Follow this greenhouse success formula and you will have a hobby or a business that is successful.  You will have a place that is functional and beautiful.

The Greenhouse Garden

May 21st, 2007 by Greenthumb

Looking forward to growing fresh fruits or vegetable year round?  Ready for beautiful floral bouquets, even during the winter?  Thinking about starting a new business?  It may be time for a garden greenhouse.  A garden greenhouse can help you accomplish the above goals.

You may live in a climate that is not conducive to gardening for more than a few months during the year.  If you are a person who loves to garden and wants to expand the growing season, a garden greenhouse is exactly what you need!

Garden greenhouses are now more affordable than ever before.  They come in all shapes and sizes and can be instrumental in allowing the gardener extra growing time during the year, no matter where he or she lives.

Garden greenhouses are structures that can be made of various materials such as plastic, wood or glass.  When the garden greenhouse is built in a sunny location, solar radiation heats the structure and the air is warmed and retained. These are the perfect places for growing all kinds of things.

A garden greenhouse has many uses.  It can be used to grow a variety of flowers, fruits and vegetables.  The garden greenhouse can also be used to grow herbs.  These items can be used by the greenhouse gardener or can be sold to local businesses or in area farmer’s markets.  Some greenhouse gardeners make use of the greenhouse to start seedlings in the early spring so they are all ready to be planted into the ground as soon as the weather is warm enough.  The garden greenhouse can be implemented by those gardeners who want to extend the growing season in the fall.

Garden greenhouses may have metal, wood, plastic or composite frames.  You will also find all kinds of things that can be used in the greenhouse.  You may need a ventilation system, a way to water and cool the greenhouse and various supplies and accessories.

Choose a garden greenhouse and you will be on the way to a hobby that provides your family with delicious and healthy fruits and vegetables or gorgeous flower arrangements.  Choose a garden greenhouse and start a new business.  The possibilities are endless!

Easy Radius Garden Tools. Save your wrist!

May 16th, 2007 by Greenthumb

Last year at the National Hardware Show we ran across the ergonomic Radius garden tools. These are the first tools we found that claim to reduce wrist fatigue that really work! I had tried some other hand tools that claimed to be easier on the wrist and arm muscles, but either they were too cumbersome or they just didn’t work like they claimed.

The first Radius tool I tried was the ergonomic radius weeder. First of all, I don’t have any weeder that is designed this way. You just slide the weeder into the dirt behind the weed and pop it out. It makes getting out those long tap roots super easy. So the tool itself is very effective and as a bonus, the handle design makes it seem effortless. This is now my favorite tool. I use it 75 percent of the time because it works for most of my gardening tasks.

I also have the radius cultivator. I compared this tool side by side with another ‘hand rake’ that I had. My old cultivator with a straight handle was harder to manage and control when reaching under my bushes to rake out debris. Because you grip the radius garden cultivator differently, it made the work easy. I could really feel the difference in the amount of wrist fatigue between the two tools. The radius cultivator was the clear winner and I got rid of my old tool - I see no reason why I would ever use it again.

As you might imagine, the radius trowel and the radius bulb trowel work equally as well. I found it a little weird to get use to the change in hand grip after years of gripping from the top and twisting my wrist to dig into the dirt. But once I forced myself to hold the radius trowels the correct way, the muscles in my arm were much more relaxed and there was no strain on my wrist.

All in all, I just can’t say enough good things about the radius tools. If you try one, you will see for yourself what a difference they make and soon you will be replacing all your tools with Radius tools. I heard they are going to be adding long handled tools to their ergonomic tool line. I can’t wait to see what the shovel feels like!

Gifts Of Love From The Garden Greenhouse

May 14th, 2007 by Greenthumb

Need another reason to own a greenhouse? When you own a greenhouse you have the opportunity to give gifts to others throughout the year.  These gifts can be practical and meaningful and they can be given to friends and relatives alike.

If you grow flowers in your garden greenhouse you will be able to deliver beautiful bouquets to friends and family members on special occasions.  Put together a pretty arrangement for mom’s birthday or friend Rebecca’s promotion.  Don’t forget about Valentine’s Day or Thanksgiving!

You may even be able to provide the corsages and bouquets for a small wedding.  Think about how wonderful it would be to design a lovely arrangement of flowers for that special bride.

Maybe you would prefer to dry flowers and use them to create breathtaking wreaths or fragrant sachets. You could put together a unique blend of potpourri and give it to a friend as a Christmas gift.

Speaking of the holidays, you can combine the “fruits” of your garden greenhouse with items from your kitchen and create gifts that will be appreciated by anyone who receives them.  Develop a vinegar using herbs from the garden greenhouse or make festive centerpieces that combine fruits, flowers and vegetables from the greenhouse.

Delight someone who is recovering from a cold with a delicious chicken soup that contains vegetables and herbs from the garden greenhouse.  Add a loaf of bread or a dozen homemade cookies and you will have a scrumptious gift.

When a friend or relative is having a baby or bridal shower, your gift could be the decorations for the table.  You could use some of the flowers from your garden greenhouse to decorate candleholders and place cards.  Let your imagination run wild and you will be able to come up with all kinds of decorating ideas.

You may want to give small pots with flowers or seedlings to friends in the spring.  If you need a more substantial gift you could give a basket that contains three or four small terra cotta pots with seedlings ready to transplant, gardening gloves and a few tools that can be used in the garden greenhouse or the outside garden.

Gifts of love abound when a garden greenhouse owner is the giver.

I Went To A Garden Party

May 11th, 2007 by Greenthumb

If you have a garden greenhouse, you may have the perfect place for a garden party. After all, what could be better than a party in a greenhouse filled with beautiful flowers and plants?

The theme of your party will not be hard to come up with!  The garden party is a theme that can be easily accomplished in a greenhouse.  You may need to spend some time getting the garden greenhouse ready but if it has enough room, you are in business.

You will need to decide if there is a specific reason for the party.  Are you going to have a wedding shower, a birthday party or an anniversary celebration?  Maybe you want to congratulate a friend or just have a lovely get together.

Once you have decided the reason for the party you will be ready to prepare and send the invitations.  You can make these invitations and even use things from your garden greenhouse such as dried flowers or herbs.  Send the invitations at least one month in advance and make sure your guest list is the right size for the space you have in the greenhouse.  If the garden greenhouse is rather small you may be able to move part of the festivities to the area outside of the greenhouse.

You may have room in the greenhouse for the tables and chairs you will need for the party.  If not, you can arrange the greenhouse so that the food and beverages are inside and the seating is outside.  Plan to use some of your potted plants as centerpieces and you may have all kinds of other things around the garden greenhouse that can be used in creative ways.  If you want to dress things up a bit you can add ribbons, vases or other containers that will hold flowers and plants.

When cooking for the garden party you may have fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and even flowers that can be used.  Float edible flowers in the punch and add garnishes using herbs and vegetables.  Serve dip with your homegrown fruits and vegetables or combine them with other ingredients for a delectable main course.

If you have a garden greenhouse, having a garden party will be a breeze!

The Joys Of Greenhouse Gardening

May 8th, 2007 by Greenthumb

Thinking about buying a greenhouse?  There are many joys involved with owning a garden greenhouse.

If you are a person who loves to garden, greenhouse gardening is the hobby for you and a joy as well.  You will have the ability to grow all kinds of things and even if you have a short growing season you will be able to garden much longer.

Think of the happiness you will experience when you walk into your own greenhouse and experience the beauty of growing plants and flowers.  If you choose to grow flowers you will be able to have a bouquet or two in the house all year long.

The joy continues when you grow vegetables or fruit that can be brought to the table.  Imagine having fresh tomatoes or vine-ripened cucumbers when the snow is flying.  Put together a salad or add herbs to a homemade pizza sauce or salsa.

Enjoy making crafts?  You can use the fruits of your labors to create wreathes, sachets and handmade greeting cards.  Share these gifts with family members and friends.

You can spread the joy of your garden greenhouse throughout the holidays when you use your greenhouse skills to make table cards, centerpieces and delectable treats.  Many flowers are edible and can be used to decorate cookies, salads and drinks.  Use herbs in recipes for vinegar and oils for dipping.

The joys of the garden greenhouse continue when you teach a grandchild about the wonders of gardening.  You can help a child learn how to grow and nurture plants.  Children love being part of the gardening experience.

Look for garden greenhouses that are built to last and that won’t overheat.  Find a company that has a long history of experience with greenhouses. Ask questions and compare the various designs of greenhouse kits.  Once you make your choice you can have the greenhouse and all accessories shipped right to your door.

A greenhouse is indeed a thing of joy.  If you have been waiting to purchase a greenhouse you may want to speed up the process.  A garden greenhouse is a thing of joy forever.

Water: An Important Greenhouse Supply

May 2nd, 2007 by Greenthumb

Greenhouse supplies come in handy if you have a greenhouse.  Some of these supplies are helpful and others are crucial.  Water is a greenhouse supply that falls into the second category. If you have a greenhouse you will need to have a way to water the plants and flowers.  Here are some options you can consider and ones to avoid when watering your greenhouse plants.

The best way to water the plants in your greenhouse is the old-fashioned way - with a garden hose. By hand watering, you can give each plant the individual attention it needs. This way plants that dry out faster than others will get watered as they need it without overwatering the other plants.  Watering each plant individually does take a fair amount of time each day. Some of us have the time and experience great pleasure in nurturing each plant on a daily basis. For those who vacation often or simply don’t have the time, drip irrigation is another watering solution to consider.

Drip irrigation systems are becoming more and more popular as an easy and efficient way to water your plants. With drip irrigation, a custom flexible tube goes to each pot from a main water pipe. A custom nozzle on the end of each tube is selected to direct just the right amount of water to each plant. There are many different nozzles available to suit each individual plant. The system can be automated with a timer to make watering your greenhouse plants easy. If you do go with drip irrigation, stick with adjustable drippers (ones where you can adjust the flow of water). If you move a plant out of the greenhouse, you can adjust the dripper so it is off until you find a new plant to fill the area.

An overhead sprinkler system can automate your watering and make it quick and easy. The problem is that the greenhouse and plants may get too wet and bugs and disease can become a problem. Plus, some plants may be out of range and not get enough water. So while it is easy to set up and automate, it is not a good long term solution for your plants.

Does an overhead misting system do the trick? A misting system works well for tropical greenhouse plants to provide extra humidity, but you should not consider a misting system as a way to water your plants. Misting in the greenhouse is really just a means to add humidity to an arid greenhouse and help to cool the inside of the greenhouse.

Water is one of those greenhouse supplies that are a necessity. Consider which option will be best for you to water your greenhouse plants.
