Transluscent Greenhouse Covering

June 25th, 2007 by Greenthumb

When you buy a greenhouse, there are many things to consider to make sure your greenhouse performs well. Of course, you should begin with a strong greenhouse frame to help assure your greenhouse will hold up for many years. For the best environment for your greenhouse plants, make sure you select a good greenhouse covering. If you have not purchased a greenhouse yet or need to recover an existing greenhouse, consider choosing a translucent twin-wall greenhouse covering to benefit your plants.

With translucent greenhouse covering, you will be able to better maintain a consistent greenhouse temperature . Glass greenhouse coverings and single walled coverings will transfer air between the outside and inside the greenhouse quickly.  So if your day goes from sunny to cloud cover with a sudden drop in temperature, your greenhouse temperature will drop right along with the outside temperature. A double-walled translucent covering will help the temperature to change very gradually, so your plants will have less shock when the outside temperature changes quickly. The twin-wall panels also retain the suns heat longer into the night, so your heater will run less often.

A translucent covering will provide diffuse light, which is the best light for your plants. With glass covering, sunlight passes through directly in a straight line. This can add up to scorching hot areas in your greenhouse. Just think about what it feels like when you are sitting in your car on a hot day. On the other hand, a translucent greenhouse covering scatters the light into your greenhouse. The light bounces all over at many angles, even reaching the underside of the plants leaves! More light to your plants means more plant growth. You can also use more of your greenhouse. Since the light particles spread all over there are no shadows, so all of your greenhouse is usable for growing your plants.

Translucent twin-wall greenhouse covering will give your plants the environment they need for the best plant growth possible.

Greenhouse gardening for fun and profit

June 21st, 2007 by Greenthumb

Love to garden?  Can’t wait to get outside as soon as the snow and ice disappears?  Need a new source of income?  If the answer to these questions is, “yes,” you should consider a greenhouse.

A greenhouse can be the perfect answer for the gardener who would love to be able to grow things all year.  It also can easily be turned into a greenhouse business to earn some extra money.

Greenhouses are available in all shapes and sizes and for all different kinds of gardeners.  You can start small but you may not want to start too small because if you enjoy your hobby and want to expand your business venture, it won’t be long before you will need a larger greenhouse.

You could use your greenhouse to grow flowers for a farmer’s market or for a local flower shop.  You may have a flair for flower arranging and could use your greenhouse flowers to design arrangements for weddings and other special occasions.

There are some greenhouse gardeners who grow flowers for dried arrangements.  These arrangements can be made and sold the entire year and they can be special ordered for holidays and seasonal events.

Another possibility for the greenhouse grower is to grow and sell herbs.  There are so many ways to use herbs both fresh and dried. Some herbs are especially in high demand at health food stores. It’s always good to ask around and see what is needed in your market.

If you enjoy growing vegetables you can sell them at outdoor markets.  A greenhouse also comes in handy for starting vegetables early so they are ready to plant outside as soon as the weather allows.  The use of a greenhouse makes it possible to have more vegetables for sale both earlier in the spring and later in the fall.

A greenhouse provides hours of indoor gardening pleasure, and in addition, can create an opportunity for you to start a greenhouse business to make some extra money.

Now you can find all the greenhouse information you need  - easily! At least that is my intension! I just created a search engine called ‘Greenhouse Resource Search Engine’. It is in it’s infancy at this point, but my hopes are to get the most useful content about greenhouses posted to it to help all of us to more easily find greenhouse related topics. The purpose of the search engine is to sift through all the unrelated greenhouse websites that are simply created to show ads. You are welcome to contribute and add any greenhouse related websites that you find interesting. It will even show popular queries on your site. This way you can see what people are searching for. Please give us any feedback you have!

Here’s a link if you are wondering how to create your own google custom search engine.

Greenhouse Ventilation: Is It Necessary?

June 15th, 2007 by Greenthumb

If you have a greenhouse you will definitely need to think about ventilation.  Greenhouse ventilation is a very important function in a greenhouse.

When your greenhouse is well ventilated the air movement will help to lower temperatures and distribute the air to remove cold and hot spots.

During the summer you will need greenhouse ventilation to help with cooling and moving stale air. An exhaust fan will help to push hot air out of the greenhouse and draw the cooler air in. On extremely hot days, you may need to use shade cloths and evaporative coolers in addition to exhaust fans.

Winter greenhouse ventilation is needed to help prevent condensation and to distribute the heat evenly in the greenhouse.  This is important to make sure all areas of the greenhouse are getting enough heat.

You can provide greenhouse ventilation by making sure your air flow is at the proper level.  Circulation fans should stay on 24 hours a day to keep air continually moving in the greenhouse and distribute fresh air to your plants. Exhaust fans with thermostat controls can be set to draw hot air out of the greenhouse when the greenhouse researches the temperature you set. You can use fans, doors, vents, or windows to help aid your greenhouse ventilation.

If your greenhouse uses a plastic poly film covering, you can also control the air flow by removing or gathering up a portion of the covering.

If you decide to use fans for greenhouse ventilation the proper placement is important.  You will want the exhaust fans to be as high as possible for more efficient cooling.  Intake vents should be low to the ground and opposite your exhaust fans to draw air in from the ground level and to push the hot air up and out the opposite end. Position circulation fans so they will pull the air across the length of the greenhouse.  Exhaust the hot air to the outside and you will be cooling your greenhouse efficiently.

So the answer to the question ‘is greenhouse ventilation necessary’ is a resounding, “yes”!!!!

What Are Greenhouse Supplies And Which Ones Will I Need?

June 12th, 2007 by Greenthumb

These are two good questions for any greenhouse owner or someone who is thinking about purchasing a greenhouse. Greenhouse supplies are something every greenhouse owner will need. Your greenhouse supplies help create the right conditions for your greenhouse environment to keep your plants thriving and healthy.

Let’s start with your greenhouse flooring and walkways. A concrete floor gives you a solid base for your greenhouse, but this type of flooring is also more expensive and needs drainage.  For walkways it is best to find something that will give you traction and not be slippery. We have always preferred a 3/4″ gravel base throughout our greenhouses. This is easy to walk on and care for and provides great drainage. Also, consider a weed barrier to set under the greenhouse or be prepared to do some weeding!

Benches make important greenhouse supplies.  Some greenhouse kits come with benches already built into the kit to help maximize your growing area. If your greenhouse does not have benches, you will want benches that are strong and well-made.  Another important consideration is that the benches are porous to allow air to flow around the plants and allow water to drain. These greenhouse supplies should be easy to clean, too. If you have room to add double-tiered benches, you will have even more space to start seedlings and house your plants.

Have you thought about how you will heat your greenhouse?  This is a consideration that can make the difference between a successful greenhouse experience and one that is not successful.  Since greenhouses have minimal insulation, there can be quite a bit of heat loss on nights that are cold. You will want to investigate greenhouse heaters carefully - they are one of the most important greenhouse supplies.

Ventilation systems are another important greenhouse supplies that needs to be considered.  When you have a good ventilation system, you will be able to remove hot air and lower the relative humidity in your greenhouse. Ventilation is important even in the winter to help minimize condensation. A good exhaust fan and a few circulation fans should help keep your greenhouse healthy.

All of these greenhouse supplies will help ensure that your greenhouse experience will be a good one.

Greenhouse Cooling: How Does It Work

June 6th, 2007 by Greenthumb

Many greenhouses can be used all year. Summer, surprisingly is one of the hardest times of year to use a greenhouse. Some people grow starts in their greenhouse to be planted out in the yard in the summer, while others use the greenhouse for a permanant home to special varieties of plants.

If a greenhouse is being used in the summer, the challenge of keeping it from overheating arises. More plants actually die from overheating then from freezing. Using a shade cloth and fan will help much of the time in some areas. In torrid climates, the only way to cool the greenhouse sufficiently is with a greenhouse cooler.

A greenhouse cooling system that sustains humidity as well as temperature levels is very desirable. Evaporative cooling systems work by reducing the air temperature as water evaporates, leaving a cool moist air…like the air you would find sitting next to a waterfall on a hot summer day. You can buy evaporative coolers for just a few hundred dollars. They run on very little electricity, and they do not use refrigerants so their impact on the environment is minimal.

To select a evaporative greenhouse cooling unit you need to know the square feet of your greenhouse. You can find the total square feet by multiplying the length of the greenhouse by the width.

A greenhouse cooling system will help you keep all your plants at the right temperature in hot climates. If you plan to use your greenhouse in the summer, be sure to look at your cooling options. Be prepared to invest in an evaporative cooler if you live in the South.
