Set in Stone

When selecting the perfect greenhouse for your garden, it’s often tempting to opt for a greenhouse kit, especially if you’re trying to keep to a limited budget. Most greenhouse kits are designed to be as simple as possible to construct, with pre-drilled, lightweight components – but if you want to try something a bit more ambitious, designing a stone-set greenhouse could be the thing for you.

A stone-set greenhouse doesn’t just rest on the ground, supported by a tie down kit, like a normal greenhouse. Instead, it’s rooted in a low wall which can itself form an attractive feature for your garden. If you choose to design a lean-to model you can construct that wall to match the masonry in your home. Stone set greenhouses have an elegant, traditional appearance. They’re also can be sturdier than other designs, making them a good choice in areas troubled by high winds.

Constructing a stone set greenhouse requires some basic masonry skills. You’ll need to start by digging a trench foundation for the wall and choosing the right stone to work with. You will need beans to be fitted into the wall as you build it, and you’ll need to get your measurements right so that the greenhouse panels can be comfortably slotted into place. After they’re in position, seal the edges with mortar and add a layer of cladding to the top of the wall to give it a professional appearance. This will ensure a well-sealed greenhouse which fits in with the appearance of your home and garden.

A stone-set greenhouse may require a bit more effort than the average greenhouse design, but it will be built to last, and will be a beautiful showpiece.
