Installing a kitchen greenhouse window for your home can give your kitchen some of the same pleasures of your garden, inside your house. The scent of fresh herbs not only can make a kitchen feel warmer and more inviting, but having fresh herbs on hand can turn everyday meals into gourmet dishes. When the winter months are upon us, and it is too cold outside for our outdoor plants to prosper, we can bring them inside and set them in our window. With an installation of a kitchen greenhouse window, and the proper type of lighting, you’ll be able to nurture your herb pots, even during the frosty winter months.
Before you start
Getting started on your kitchen greenhouse window installation can be as simple as installing a few shelves into a window nook, then placing your series of potted plants upon the shelves. You will want to make a list and gather your materials before beginning the project. You will need shelving material (wood or wire racks are best), extra containers or pots, seed packets or already potted plants, soil, nails, a hammer; a level, and sandpaper.
Installing the shelves
First, measure the window space, then cut the shelves accordingly. Allow ample vertical space between the shelves to promote healthy growth. Check to see if your windows are inset or framed-in wood (this is where installing a kitchen greenhouse window for your home goes from plan to project). If the windows are not inset, you can go ahead and add the shelves. Use brackets to install the shelves on either side of the window. If you opt to use glass for your shelves rather than wood, make sure to determine how much weight the new glass shelf can bear, and then make sure to get the edges finished.
Finishing off
Fashion your shelf brackets from small pieces of molding, and then sand the edges until they are smooth. Next, paint the wood to match the window frame. Attach molding bracket to the side of the window, while ensuring that it’s level. Repeat the process with each of your shelves.
After just a few days of sunlight, you will be enjoying the wonderful scent of fresh herbs every time you walk in your kitchen. Even better, your whole family will enjoy the fresh herbs enhancing the family meals, even during the winter months. Installing a kitchen greenhouse window for your home can be both fun and ultimately delicious.
