Greenhouse Heating: The Issues

December 12th, 2006 by Greenthumb

There are issues when it comes to greenhouse heating.  Very few greenhouse situations will work out well without the addition of some type of greenhouse heating system.

One of the issues involved in greenhouse heating is the size of the greenhouse.  Normally the larger the greenhouse, the larger the greenhouse heating issues.  Not that larger greenhouses mean larger greenhouse heating problems, possibly bigger systems.  Smaller greenhouses will not require as large a system.

Another thing to consider when determining your greenhouse heating needs is where the greenhouse will be located.  This means not only the part of the country but also the actual spot where the greenhouse will be constructed.  For those living in warmer climates, your greenhouse heating needs may not be as complicated.  If, however you live in a part of the country that experiences really cold winter temperatures, it could be that you will need more in the way of greenhouse heating.

Those who build their greenhouse in an area that will receive cold winds from the north will find that their greenhouse heating needs will not be the same as someone who builds their greenhouse out of the wind.  Trees and buildings that block the sun are also factors.  Consider these issues before you build your greenhouse.

Greenhouse gardeners who choose a wide variety of plants and flowers will have different greenhouse heating needs than those who grow only one or two types of plants or flowers that have the same or similar heating requirements.  These are things that should be contemplated carefully before choosing a greenhouse heating system.

You will find that when you give some thought to greenhouse heating needs and plan accordingly, you will have just the perfect system for your greenhouse gardening.

I have heard something about rabbits being a source of heat. Have you tried that or do you know if it really works?

We have not had any rabbits ourselves, but have heard about the benefits. Rabbits give off 8 BTU’s of heat each hour equaling roughly 2.5 gal of fuel in a 6 month period. The manure from the rabbits is an additional heat source and makes good fertilizer. For more complete information, there is a book available called Solviva by Anna Edey. http://www.solviva.com/
