Water: An Important Greenhouse Supply

Greenhouse supplies come in handy if you have a greenhouse. Some of these supplies are helpful and others are crucial. Water is a greenhouse supply that falls into the second category. If you have a greenhouse you will need to have a way to water the plants and flowers. Here are some options you can consider and ones to avoid when watering your greenhouse plants.
The best way to water the plants in your greenhouse is the old-fashioned way - with a garden hose. By hand watering, you can give each plant the individual attention it needs. This way plants that dry out faster than others will get watered as they need it without overwatering the other plants.  Watering each plant individually does take a fair amount of time each day. Some of us have the time and experience great pleasure in nurturing each plant on a daily basis. For those who vacation often or simply don’t have the time, drip irrigation is another watering solution to consider.
Drip irrigation systems are becoming more and more popular as an easy and efficient way to water your plants. With drip irrigation, a custom flexible tube goes to each pot from a main water pipe. A custom nozzle on the end of each tube is selected to direct just the right amount of water to each plant. There are many different nozzles available to suit each individual plant. The system can be automated with a timer to make watering your greenhouse plants easy. If you do go with drip irrigation, stick with adjustable drippers (ones where you can adjust the flow of water). If you move a plant out of the greenhouse, you can adjust the dripper so it is off until you find a new plant to fill the area.
An overhead sprinkler system can automate your watering and make it quick and easy. The problem is that the greenhouse and plants may get too wet and bugs and disease can become a problem. Plus, some plants may be out of range and not get enough water. So while it is easy to set up and automate, it is not a good long term solution for your plants.
Does an overhead misting system do the trick? A misting system works well for tropical greenhouse plants to provide extra humidity, but you should not consider a misting system as a way to water your plants. Misting in the greenhouse is really just a means to add humidity to an arid greenhouse and help to cool the inside of the greenhouse.
Water is one of those greenhouse supplies that are a necessity. Consider which option will be best for you to water your greenhouse plants.
